Scott introduces new GT Series fly rods | Hatch Magazine

Amongst the seemingly countless models and iterations of fly rods that manufacturers have brought to market over the last half century or so, only a handful of models have made such a lasting impression on anglers that they have created a community of aficionados— anglers who dismiss the temptation of the constant drumbeat of rod releases and marketing copy that professes each shiny new implement to be the latest, greatest, must-have creation.

Scott’s G Series has long been one of those models, praised by anglers who eschew overly stiff sticks in favor of rods with more feel, finesse, and soul. In the last 50 years, Scott has produced only three generations of its beloved G Series rods, preferring, in typical Scott fashion, to produce a new iteration of the series only when the Montrose, Colorado-based rod maker feels it can meaningfully improve on its predecessor. For G Series devotees, that time has come again, with Scott announcing its latest addition to the “G” series legacy, the all-new Scott GT fly rods.

Faithful Scott G Series anglers will be reassured by Scott taking care to highlight its dedication to maintaining the feel and action characteristic of the G Series above its touting of new technology. In introducing the rods, Scott noted “[these new] rods wouldn’t deserve the G Series badge if they were just about the latest tech. The Scott Fly Rod Company has pushed themselves to make these some of the most artful and soulful rods they’ve ever crafted.”

Still, being able to meaningfully improve on the previous generation of G Series rods requires advancements in technology and construction, and the new GT lineup is backed by a bevy of them. As is the trend across the rod building landscape, the new GT series features thinner blank wall construction. According to Scott, the new “GT rods are the first series to feature the newest version of X-Core design principles, producing the thinnest walled blanks Scott has ever created. These rods incorporate new multi-modulus layups combined with Scott’s ARC2 multidirectional fibers to increase recovery and line speed, giving the rods greater stability and accuracy.”

In the new GT Series, Scott is also introducing a new version of its signature hollow-ferrule design, which allows Scott rods a higher degree of flex between sections when compared to rods with a traditional, solid ferrule design. According to Scott, the new hollow-ferule design is 20% lighter than the previous incarnation, allowing for even greater flex between sections — producing a rod action more akin to one-piece rods while maintaining a travel-friendly form factor.

Anglers will also likely notice the conspicuous lack of even a single 9-foot model across the entire GT series lineup. Instead, the GT series offers a mix of 8’ 10” and 9’ 8” models, with a few shorter 7’4” and 8’4” models added to the lineup. According to Scott, the somewhat non-traditional rod lengths in the new GT series is borne of an effort to “showcase the best characteristics of G Series rods.”

The new Scott GT Series is available immediately from authorized Scott dealers.
