If you’ve never heard of the Blue Flash Damsel, you’ve likely missed one of the most effective stillwater patterns ever tied. Its success was so consistent that some folk considered banning it in some competitions, which tells you everything you need to know about how well it works!
As a result, anglers have developed a range of clever alternatives, and here Steve walks us through one of them – the Blue Flash Diawl Bach.
This is a clean, no-nonsense pattern that takes its cues from the original Blue Flash Damsel but trims things back slightly. It’s lighter, more subtle, and arguably more versatile, while still retaining that key trigger that makes the original so deadly.
The Blue Flash Diawl Bach really comes into its own from early to mid-summer, particularly through June and July, when this style of pattern can be incredibly effective on stillwaters.
It’s one of those flies that’s always worth having in your box. Whether you’re heading out for a casual session or planning a summer trip, tie a few up and give them a run, and you’ll see why these Blue Flash variants have built such a strong reputation.
