Fly tying is one of those hobbies that can quickly turn into a collector’s obsession not necessarily for flies, but for all the leftover tying materials that seem to accumulate over time. But that’s also part of the magic of fly tying. Even when you don’t have enough material left to tie a well-known pattern, those spare pieces can often inspire something completely different and surprisingly effective.
That’s exactly where Steve’s Double Rabbit pattern comes in. Using leftover Rabbit Zonker strips, he’s created a compact yet highly mobile lure pattern designed for reservoir fishing. Inspired by the popular Fluff Cat, the Double Rabbit carries over the same enticing movement, featuring a long, flowing tail and a built-up body that comes alive in the water.
Before throwing spare materials to the back of your tying desk, take a moment to sort through what you’ve got. You might discover there’s enough there for a couple of unique experimental patterns. Sometimes, those “leftover” flies end up becoming hidden gems patterns that fish simply can’t resist and that nobody else is tying.
All materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre or Edinburgh Angling Centre and are listed below. As always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes, we’ll be happy to help.
